Your task:
Create a package for a product (no bigger than the palm of your hand). It should meet the following requirements:
Must be creative and eye catching
- For the Marketing Department:
Must stack easily and look good on the shelves
- For the Financial Division:
Must be cost effective to produce
What to do:
- Pick your object. Remember, it should fit in the palm of your hand.
- Brainstorm a list of shapes and sizes of packages that you see in stores. Consider what essential information is usually displayed on the package itself. Don’t forget that the consumer must open the product some how!!!! Does it need to close again? What is on the inside of the package? Is it just the product or does it need more?
- Think about the shapes and sizes of packages that you see on shelves in the store. Think about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of package. Don’t forget to consider some of your tasks (stackability, cost effectiveness, etc.)
- Plan an effective package for your item. Consider how much space is needed for your product inside the package. Should you object be seen? How could you accomplish this?
- Draw and label the dimensions of the polyhedron net for your package.
- Use your net to make the final package. Don’t forget to include the essential information for the outside of your package.
- Answer the questions.

- Describe why you chose the packaging that you did? How did the shape of your object affect your packaging?
- Does your package make sense from a sales point of view? Is it easily stacked on store shelves?
- How did you try to make your packaging attract consumers?
- What is the surface area of your package (in centimeters)?
- If construction materials cost $0.005 per square centimeter, how much would it cost to construct your package?
- What is the volume of your package (in centimeters)?
