From the Winter 2007 Newsletter...By Mr. Tileston

The holidays are always a time for retrospection and introspection.  And, this year I spent some time wondering about what musicians King Philip has produced over the years.  How many or who among our many students have gone on to study music and have pursued it as a profession?  Who have gone on to different things, but kept music performance as a part of their lives?  I went over the alumni list for the 24 years since I began teaching here, to try and produce an informal list of kids that initially went on to music.  I do not profess its complete accuracy, and would love to hear an update from these people as well as to hear where I may have been in error.

So, starting with most recent graduates, here goes:

2006   Evan Butler and Sarah Miller attend McGill University, majoring in   music performance.  Timothy Sepe attends UMASS Dartmouth majoring in percussion performance.  Mae Deevey attends school in New York pursuing musical theater.

2005    Erik Saras is at Northwestern University, majoring in music performance on bass trombone.   Charles Sherwin attends UMASS Lowell, where he performs in the music program and may double major in his junior year. Jason Sundberg is pursuing Music composition after first attending UMASS Amherst.

2004  AJ Simard attends UMASS Lowell, majoring in music recording.  Derek Koziol attends McGill University, majoring in music recording and engineering.  Mike Butler has performed with the Cadets, DCI world champions. Shalyn Simmer teaches our color guard, as she has since her graduation.

2003  Lindsay King plays in a community band in Canada.  Jeff Jacobson plays jazz piano in the area while attending Colorado University.   Ryan Beans was drum major of his college band this fall.  Stephen Dacko plays drums in jazz combos in Maine and elsewhere.

2002  Morgan Bent is finishing up at BU in music performance. Sarah Cronin was a music major at Syracuse, and now works for an orchestra in Boston. Jim Foulis continues to attend Northeastern as an engineer, but also teaches our drum line. Vito Giacalone graduated from BU with a performance major and is now attending the New England Conservatory for a Masters in performance. Mike (Stan) Moore attends UMASS Dartmouth as a percussion major, and teaches the Dartmouth High School drum line.  He has aged out of the Cadets, but  now teaches the drum line at the cadets as well. Matt Sieloff went to U Penn and now teaches history in Pennsylvania, where he is Assistant Band Director of the school’s marching band.  Jessica Terrio pursued music at UMASS Dartmouth, in percussion.

2001  Janice Bishop went to Hartt School of Music and is now a music educator in Massachusetts.  Linda Boulden went to BU as a business major and is making millions, but she also plays her piano as an accompanist for our chorus and chamber concerts. Josh Clark studied music performance at UMASS Anherst for a time. Jillian DiNunzio graduated from BU as a music education major and now teaches in the Scituate Public Schools. Magan Swanson moved to Texas before graduating but pursued music education for a while.

2000  Christopher Plummer went to BU to study music but transferred to film making.

1999  Kevin Zahner went to the University of North Texas to major in percussion performance, continues to reside in Texas and is a professional musician. George Bent graduated BU as a performance major, and now teaches trombone here at King Philip, as well as being a policeman and an EMT.

1998  Sean Simmer graduated UMASS Dartmouth as a percussion major, having started at the University of North Texas.  For awhile, Sean taught our program before going back to work in his father’s business. Tara Rukstalis, although not a musician, graduated UMASS Amherst and has returned to be a color guard instructor here at KP.

1997  Jennifer Daigle went to Hartt Music School, and is pursuing her Doctorate in Music Education.

1996  Jeremy Udden went to the New England Conservatory for both his bachelors and masters degrees in jazz performance.  He performed with the Either Orchestra for years and also taught at King Philip for many years in our jazz program and after school lesson program.  He is now pursing a music profession out of New York City. Danielle Ouellette went to California, where I believe she pursued music education. Ryan O’Connor went to the New England Conservatory for a time. Marc Levetin transferred into music while at Syracuse University.

1995  Heather Wainwright studied music performance on piano at the Boston Conservatory.

1994   Sean Greene majored in music at Berklee College of Music.  Jonathan Berman went to Westfield State and studied music performance.

1992  Michelle Lennihan, who is now a lawyer, went to George Washington University where she was president of the wind ensemble in her senior year. Rick Copeland began in music at UMASS Amherst, but has ended up in acting and musical theater.

1991   Cara (Mcgrath) Mulcahy went to Bridgewater State College and majored in music education.  She now owns a web-design company, teaches flute here at King Philip, and also operates the MICCA web-site. Kurt Mattila went on to a career in film, and is currently directing a feature length movie.  He has worked with Steven Spielberg on special effects.

1990  Josh Wolloff, a UMASS grad in music education, is our current Band Director at the middle school.  David Pope went to UMASS as a performance major, then went to Eastman School of Music for jazz studies.  He is now a professor at James Madison University in Virginia, where he teaches saxophone.

For now that is all I can think of, but when you add it up it comes out to 46 former music students having gone on and continued a musical experience.  This isn’t to mention the many, many students who are now lifelong advocates of music education.  I would love to hear from former students and receive updates on their lives.  Whether or not alumni continue to play at music, it will always be in them.   One doesn’t have to make music one’s life to have music in one’s life.
