The high school choral program continues to prepare for a number of performances, including the MICCA choral festival.  With 48 members and only three men, it’s a challenge to offer a balanced sound, so a man’s chorus group has been formed.  This group will meet once a week, on Mondays from 2:45 to 3:30 PM, beginning in January.  They’ll learn the choral music as well as some doo-wop and possibly barbershop music.   The choral program is now being supported by a vocal program at the middle school, led by Jennifer Brewer.  Performing with an instrument is very much like singing through it.  Chorus just allows us to take away the appendage, and we are free to be truly expressive.

 2005-2006

Our choral programs at the middle school and high school experienced another year of growth in quality and enhancement this year. The King Philip Regional School District presented its first ever choral concert on March 30th at the middle school, featuring the high school chorus and three choruses from the middle school. It was a great evening, showing off a wonderfully developing program.

The middle school choral program, lead by Jennifer Brewer, is now composed of three groups: the 7th grade Aria Chorus, the 8th grade Repertory Chorus, and the select after school chorus, neatly named Voces Novae. The Repertory chorus participated in the MICCA Choral Festival on Saturday, April 1st and received a bronze medal. It was a very demanding festival with a tough panel of judges, and a bronze medal meant a lot to these young vocalists, who carry a deep interest in going to the next level.

The high school chorus continues to be among the best in the state, winning a silver medal in the MICCA festival on Sunday, April 2. The chorus narrowly missed a gold medal by earning one gold rating and two silvers from the three judge panel. They were judged in a number of areas, including tone quality, dynamics, intonation, articulation, balance and blend, and interpretation. The results make it clear that the high school is knocking on the door of a gold medal. Mr. Tileston played the adjudication tapes after the MICCA weekend and the chorus found to their delight that the unaccompanied pieces maintained their pitch throughout the performance. Intonation is a major focus of rehearsals, and the performance bore that out.

To augment the other choral group, Mr. Tileston introduced an all-man’s chorus this year, which met after schools on Wednesdays. It is wonderful to have a choral department with a full complement of male and female voices. More upper class instrumentalists should consider chorus as a great way to develop a stronger ear and sense of musicianship through singing. We anticipate at least a 45-member chorus at the high school next year.

Finally, an important facet of the developing choral program in our district is the South East regional auditions, held each year in late November and early December. High school and junior high school students may prepare for the district auditions by asking the choral directors for the music now. The high school chorus actually spent the last weeks of school learning the piece for high school auditions, entitled “In These Delightful Pleasant Groves.”   The future is bright - Singing is good for all musicians.

  2005

This year's chorus continues the pursuit of excellence shown at last years performances. Participants learn to use their voices as an instrument.  Guided by Mr. Tileston, the students learn to use sol feggio and rhythmic counting strategies to read music.  Joining the chorus as an instrumentalist will strengthen one's ear as well as bolster the chorus.  Always looking for more men, we are particularly seeking tenors to provide the balance of sound needed for some of the more challenging pieces we would like to perform.

  2004

The 2004 High School chorus continued to build from last year's efforts.  With 37 members, the chorus was able to produce a full sound.  Their performance at the MICCA Choral festival earned them a silver medal.  Selections included "Danny Boy" by Fred Weatherly/arr. by Steven Porter, "Ching-A-Ring Chaw" by Aaron Copland/arr. by Irving Fine, "Duerme Negrito" by Atahualpa Yupanqui/arr. by Emile Sole and "Ain-A That Good News" by William Dawson.
