Preview Show Jazz 2  Berklee Festival State Festival  Ellington Clinic

Our jazz program continues to offer a wide variety of experiences.  At the high school there are two jazz ensembles and two jazz combos.  At the middle school there is a jazz band as well.  All of these groups meet after school.

Jazz Ensemble One is busy preparing a tape for the Essentially Ellington competition, and is developing a great repertoire list.  This group rehearses twice a week.  Look for them along with Jazz Ensemble Two at the winter preview show on February 24 at 6 PM.  Jazz Ensemble One will also compete for the first time since 1983 in the Berklee High School Jazz Festival, in lieu of competing at the UNH Jazz festival.  Finally, come see the jazz ensemble compete at the Norwood Classic on February 15, 2007 at the Coakley Middle School, in South Norwood.

Jazz Ensemble Two, a gold medalist as well last year, remains under the direction of Peter Twiraga.  They meet once a week, on Wednesday evenings, from 6 – 9 PM

The jazz combo program has been taken over by Rick McLaughlin, who is a bassist.  He has performed with the Either Orchestra, as well as alongside our own Jeremy Udden.  Jeremy has made a commitment to stay in New York City this year, as he tries to make the “Big Time.”  Good Luck, Jeremy!

The King Philip jazz program is committed to the understanding of America’s true music.  Its roots and its great swing demand a music style that must be internalized through listening to, as well as performing it.  There is no happier feeling than the feeling of swing.  When it swings inside of you, one’s commitment to the music will be complete.

2005-2006 Jazz Ensemble

It has been yet another successful, exciting year for the Jazz Program, now comprised of three full Jazz Ensembles and two Jazz Combos.  Rehearsals began back in the fall for Jazz Ensemble I, resulting in an unprecedented number of new pieces in their repertoire including the exhilarating  Stan Kenton’s Malaga , Count Basie’s Ya Gotta Try, Duke Ellington’s complex Braggin in Brass, Cottontail, and many others. The season kicked off  with a performance at the Norwood Jazz Classic, and the accolade of a gold medal win. Shortly thereafter, both Jazz I, under the direction of Peter Tileston, and Jazz II, under the direction of Peter Twiraga, performed at the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) South East District festival, at Stoughton .  Both groups gave thrilling, entertaining performances, and learned a spot at the IAJE Massachusetts State Finals in Lowell , in late March. This day proved to be a highlight of the season......both ensembles were magnificent! You only had to look around the audience to feel the excitement and admiration.  The judges were equally wowed, awarding gold medals to both ensembles, a first for King Philip.  Jazz Ensemble I & II were both subsequently honored by being given the opportunity to perform at the Hatch Shell in Boston, in May. It was yet another memorable day for the students and their families.... a sunny day along the Charles, jazz music to be heard along the esplanade, a communal picnic and a wild game of Frisbee!!

Jazz I was also fortunate to take a trip to the University of New Hampshire in March, to the Clark Terry Jazz Festival.  The Ensemble competed against 15 bands and was named most outstanding band in Division B, with many individual performances also awarded. The group was then treated to an exhilarating performance from legendary trumpeter Clark Terry.  Those Students learning the foundations of jazz in Jazz Ensemble III this year under the direction of Mr. Wolloff, certainly have much to aspire to. They performed at the annual King Philip Jazz Night recently, and proved that there is more great talent to follow in the footsteps of our graduating seniors.  Jazz Night, with guest artist Jeff Galindo, was another huge success. A trombonist, Jeff is currently on the faculty of Berklee College of Music and has performed with the Boston Pops, Ray Charles, Kenny Hadley Big Band, and Clark Terry, among many others. All the students learned from his expertise, and the students and audience alike enjoyed his performances.

The Jazz Combo groups, under the direction of the talented alumnus, Jeremy Udden, spent the season learning and honing their improvisational techniques. These talents were then exhibited at the annual Jazz Cafe held in June, a relaxed informal affair for all to enjoy.  It was sad to see yet another brilliant season come to a close, with the final performance of Jazz I at the Wrentham Concert on the Common.  A crowded common was treated to a skilled and extensive program, and it was wonderful to hear the awestruck comments from members of the community who had not before been exposed to such a remarkable program. We wish every success to the graduating seniors: Evan Butler, Sarah Miller, Kelsey Brennan, Tim Sepe, Tyler Huth, Craig Ewer, Rob Campbell, Rob Lawless and Brendan Smith.

2004 - 2005 King Philip Jazz Program

This year there are four jazz combos, including a new Dixieland group.  The combos will once again be taught by jazz great and King Philip alumni, Jeremy Udden.  The combos are an excellent place to learn about improvisation.  The beginning combo is looking for guitarists and pianists.  These combos rehearse on Friday afternoons.

The KP Jazz program also runs two large group jazz ensembles.  Jazz Ensemble I is directed by Mr. Tileston and is a select group of students who earn placement through an audition process.  This group prepares a tape for the Essentially Ellington program each year.  The Jazz Ensemble 1 made it to the Essentially Ellington Finals in 2002 and is working very hard to get back there once again.  It means a performance in Lincoln Center.  Jazz Ensemble 2 is run through Mr. Wolloff at the high school.  This group is open to both high school and middle school students and develops techniques for playing swing.  For many, it is this group that is the springboard to Jazz Ensemble I.  A third ensemble is being formed to introduce jazz at the middle school level.

 2003/2004 Jazz Program

The King Philip Jazz Ensemble, studying the works of Ellington and Count Basie,  was named one of the Most Outstanding Bands at the University of New Hampshire Clark Terry Jazz Festival on Saturday, March 20th, 2004.  King Philip was named “outstanding” in a group of 18 bands from similar-sized schools.

After the outstanding evaluation, the King Philip students were treated to a concert which included legendary jazz players Bennie Green on piano, John Clayton on bass and the festival's namesake Clark Terry still kicking it back on the trumpet.

The UNH Festival rating is part of the continuing tradition of top notch performances for the Jazz Ensemble.  The Jazz Ensemble also won a gold medal in the state jazz competition in Lowell, March 27.

The Jazz program also includes three combo programs under the direction of Jeremy Udden.  These include a Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced group to provide opportunities for all players. The Advanced Combo plays at a variety of venue including lunch breaks at the high school as well as community events looking for background jazz.  These Combos offer a great way to learn and improve skills in jazz improvization.

Also included in the jazz program are Jazz Ensemble II under the direction of Josh Wolloff with 20 students in grades 8-10 and Jazz Ensemble III under the direction of Peter Twiraga, with 20 students in grades 7-9.  We look forward to the continued growth of these students.
