Course Selection
As you plan your schedule for next year, keep an eye toward college--even if it feels far away. The classes you take today will help you succeed on admissions test, in college classes and in your future.
Just as employers want workers who have a certain skills, most colleges want students who have taken certain courses and have done well in them. Be sure to have at least four and preferably five solid academic classes on your schedule. Remember many colleges re-compute your GPA and class rank based on core subjects. It is not to early for students to begin looking at college profiles in respect to required high school courses.
Whether you're interested in a four year, junior or community college, the same guidelines apply. Your core curriculum includes four years of Math, English and at least three years of science and social studies.
Beyond the core curriculum, most colleges recommend you take at least two and preferably three years of a foreign language. Consider computer science classes for the basic skills that are essential in any college courses and jobs. The arts can help round out your schedule and develop your interest
Take the most challenging classes possible in each subject area. Take AP classes or honors classes if theyre available at your school. Discuss your education and career goals with your guidance counselor to work out a schedule that will get you on the right track.
