| Male Choir created at King Philip |

This year Mr. Tileston began King Philip’s first ever Male Choir - or as some members of the group refer to it, Man Choir. The choir was originally started because of the need for male voices in the school chorus. As it is, about five males participate in chorus as a regular course. Many students find it hard to fit into their schedule or feel it’s not their style. Mr. Tileston negates this concept, saying he wants to show it is “cool to be singing and be a guy.”
A study of the psychological and physical effects of choir singing was done at the University of London. The study proved choir singing significantly reduces tension, increases energy levels and the overall happiness of the individual. Not only does singing in a choir reduce stress, it is a great experience.
“It’s actually a lot of fun,” says Eric Whitehouse, a senior who has participated in chorus all four years of high school.
Hendrik Visser, who began choir singing this year, notes, “Manly men sing...real men.”
The Male Choir meets every Wednesday for an hour after school. About 14 students are involved. Some members can read music or have had choral experience; however, neither skills are required to join. Guys, if you are interested in either adding chorus to your schedule or joining the Male Choir, see Mr. Tileston or simply attend next Wednesday’s class.
