A New Era for the King Philip Winter Guard

By Rich Kim

The King Philip Color guard moves forward from their successful fall season into their winter guard season with a whole new look and style that will pleasantly surprise judges and fans alike.

The 2007 winter show entitled “Streams of Consciousness” successfully debuted to the public on Saturday, January 13th, 2007. Although placing third at this very early-season competition, the guard was less than two points from first place, winning the sub caption of Ensemble and placing first in General Effect. The show features music and voice overs from the movie The Hours, based on the award winning novel by Michael Cunningham which documents the life of British novelist and essayist, Virginia Woolf. Woolf was one of the first 20th century authors to introduce the writing style of streams of consciousness, which opened up the doors to contemporary literature. The show is presented in the same way – reflecting upon moments in life, both negative and positive, and how the human spirit rises and falls to both. A large grandfather clock sets the stage with mobile hands that open and close to allow the performers to spin and dance in.

Mr. Devlin returns to the KPWG design staff as the drill writer and consultant. The guard is taught by Miss Simmer, Miss Rukstalis, and Miss Lasko with Mr. Kim as director. Because of its “re-birth”, Kim wanted a complete change for the King Philip color guard to help prepare them to move into the World class level within the next couple of years. Known for their technique and cleanliness, the staff wanted to raise the bar in movement & equipment vocabulary as well as in  show design and staging so that they will be more competitive with units across the nation. Confident with their new look and style, the guard and staff knows that they are taking a chance with the many changes in the program in just one season but hopes that the winter guard audience and judges will embrace this change and reward them for all of their hard work.

With 18 girls lighting the stage, the guard will be attending the Salem Regional, the New England Power Regional (RI), EMass finals, NESBA finals, and hopes to make the top 15 guards of the nation in Scholastic Open class at WGI championships in Dayton Ohio in April.

Preview of 2007 Season

For the 2007 season the King Philip Color Guard has combined talents from the middle school and high school to form one guard of 18 girls.  During the 2007 season the team will move up to Open class and compete in the E-Mass and WGI circuits as well as the NESBA circuit.  E-Mass consists mainly of independent color guards made up of performers ages 16-20 years old.  This creates a challenge for King Philip’s guard of 13-18 year olds.  The show is an interpretation of the critically acclaimed movie The Hours.  Under the direction of Richard Kim the guard performs a moving portrayal of emotional turmoil suffered by the main character Virginia Wolfe.  The dramatic piano pieces are overlaid with emotionally charged dialogue from the movie to emphasize Virginia ’s desperate search for happiness and meaning in her life.  The floor has been painted in a clock formation under Richard Kim’s artistic direction.  Props at the top of the clock, designed by Mr. Kim and constructed by parents, provide a backdrop for the show as well as a dramatic exit and entrance point for the performers.  A hand on the face of the clock is moved by the girls to count the hours as the show progresses.  The navy and black costumes similar to Virginia ’s drab style, depict Virginia ’s shadowy dissent into darkness.  Three sets of flags in brown, blue and pink tones, all with flowing tails, emphasize the drama and feeling of the show. The color guard has taken on the challenge of a much more difficult piece which involves beautiful dance steps arranged and taught by Richard Kim, as well as complicated drill designed by Ed Devlin. Instructors Shalyn Simmer, Tara Rukstalis and Ashley Lasko have been working diligently with the team to prepare them for the first show on January 13, 2007 .  This year’s rigorous performance schedule of 13 shows culminates with the WGI World Finals in Dayton Ohio .

2006 King Philip High School Color Guard

This year the King Philip Varsity Indoor Color Guard took on the challenge of a rebuilding year with their characteristic King Philip determination. Two guards were formed, to allow the new students in middle school guard a chance to learn the basics of color guard drill, with the goal to get all members ready for the fall marching band season. With a full year of winter guard and marching band experience, the new members will be in prime condition to move up to the varsity guard next winter.

Meanwhile, the varsity color guard, half of which were made up of middle school students, vastly improved over the course of the season, and provided a shining example of the spirit of teamwork.  Under the creative direction of Leonard Machado, the superb instruction of Richard Kim, and masterful drill designed by Ed Devlin, the thirteen members of varsity guard performed exquisitely to music from the movie The Mission. The classical beginning and singing of the piece “Nella Fantasia” and tribal drums of the latter portion of the show were represented with flags matching the earthy tones of the uniforms. The show began with flags in shades of orange, and changed to blue flags, as well as weapons, at the finish. The floor was detailed to perfection by Richard Kim, and painted by the guard members as well as parents and alumni guard members, in shades of cream, yellow, and brown, to create a warm marbleized design. The parents constructed and Mr. Kim painted nine columns to depict ancient column ruins. With the beautiful floor, props, flags, and uniforms, the color guard was poised to take on the competition.  By the end of the season, the color guard had taken first place in the New England Scholastic Band Association’s finals for the National Open Class, third place at Eastern Mass finals in the open class, and fourth place at the WGI regional at Salem , Massachusetts in the Scholastic Open Class.

2006 King Philip Middle School Color Guard

In November, the King Philip Music Department held an information night for middle school students and parents interested in joining middle school guard. An exciting video of past routines and performances was shown, followed by a rehearsal, and review of the performance schedule. The girls, under the direction of Shalyn Simmer and assistant Tara Rukstalis, began rehearsals. This year’s performance featured the song Seasons of Love, from the show Rent.  The girls learned so much in those first months.  They quickly learned that color guard squad is the “sport” of the arts. Members dance to a variety of musical forms, such as show tunes, classical, contemporary music, or jazz. At the same time, movements with flags or silks, sabers, and wooden rifles, are added to the choreography, to help further interpret the music.

The girls learn some new terminology as well, as they "toss" or "spin" the equipment and more importantly "catch it!" Guard members quickly learned that they must know their routine well, or they will walk into another team member!  One of the most important things the girls learned, however, was how to be committed to the team. This can be a challenge, with three hour practices three times a week, plus the commitment to competition weekends; “outside life” was placed on hold for the season. The girls typically began their weekend with a practice session then rode busses to the host schools for the competition. A quick bag lunch preceded more practice at the site, and then finally came the competition.  We visited different schools all over Massachusetts , from Salem to Dartmouth and South Hadley . The parents also learned what the music program was all about. It is not a drop off program, but one to get involved with. They truly support the students in many ways. Many hands are needed to "sew the silk" for flags, repair costumes, and even paint the canvas floor. Parents also construct and decorate props, and learn how to load an equipment truck and set up the show floor quickly and efficiently. Of course there’s always time to cheer all the squads, as you know how much work it took just to get there!

At the first competition the girls were nervous, yet this quickly passed as they cheered each other on with words of encouragement to toss higher or “push” a move. By the end of the month the girls had not only improved their ability to spin, toss and catch, but had also gained a great deal of self-confidence, and made many new friends.  The team took first place at each competition, scoring higher and higher each time, right through the New England Scholastic Band Association's finals in Dartmouth , against all other junior varsity squads. As the girls will tell you, it was a wonderful experience to be a part of such a wonderful team and organization.  If you haven't been to a guard show, you should come see for yourself; it’s so much more than spinning flags! Parents also met new  friends and revived or discovered many skills that we might not otherwise get an opportunity to use. Involvement is up to each individual parent, but you really don't know what you are missing.  The dedication of staff and students alike is tremendous, and their efforts to go a step beyond where they thought possible really pay off. Here is to a great new season; we look forward to seeing you there!

Indoor Color Guards

Once again this year the King Philip Music Program is running two color guards, varsity and junior varsity.  To be a member of the varsity guard one must be a member of the Fall marching band and then display standard skills through a try out process in the Spring and once again in the Fall.  This group competes in the Sport of the Arts through Winter Guard International.  Last year, the group traveled  to the World Championships in San Diego, CA and were an Open Class Finalist.  This year, they will travel to the World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.  The varsity color guard will be rehearsing Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays during the Winter and Spring.  Competitions begin in the middle of January and proceed to the World Championships just before April vacation.  The varsity guard is the reigning National open class champion of the New England Scholastic Band Association, a title they have held eight times previously.

The junior varsity guard is open to anyone interested in developing skills for color guard.  These skills include dance and body movement, spinning a silk as well as marching.  The JV guard competes during the Winter in the NESBA circuit.  Rehearsals for each group are found on the web-site, with both groups rehearsing three times a week.  Students interested in more information should contact Mr. Tileston at tilestonp@kingphilip.org.

KP Winter Classic 2004

The 2003-2004 King Philip Varsity Guard turned in another Championship season.  The ten girls are veterans who have been a part of the marching program both winter and fall for many years.  Participation in the varsity guard is dependent upon skill level and fall participation in the marching band. This year's show is set to Mielah is Vouhta, a Norwegian song recorded by World Music artist Mari Boine. The production, "Dancing in  Circles" is designed around a lavender background, with a pattern of dark purple circles and one yellow circle in the middle of the empty space. Yellow was chosen to represent a spotlight. Each individual as they enter the yellow circle is "spotlighted" with a solo moment. The Varsity Guard will be competing in the Scholastic Open Class in San Diego, a class level higher than last year's group, to cap of this year's season.

After being crowned Champions of the NESBA Finals, National Open Class, the team traveled to San Diego, to perform in the WGI National Competition.  Featuring the best colorguards from across the country, the KP team made the finals round, placing ninth in the World Open Class for the first time since 1995.

The director of the Guard, Leonard Machado, worked with the KP Guard during their highly successful 2000 season. During 2000, he also directed a junior high guard and wrote for the varsity guard at another school. Assisting Mr. Machado will be Maureen Kelly, director of this past fall's marching band color guard, and Ondrea Smith in her second season with the guard. Writing the visual design will be Ed Devlin, veteran writer of the King Philip Marching Band field show for the past sixteen years. The Guard's show will utilize the music of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."
