District Festival Results

Spring 2006

It was another year of strong development for the concert band. The group entered MICCA and was judged this April as silver medal winners, after the previous year, when they went for comments only. Many of the students participating in concert band have gone on to the symphony band, while others seem to enjoy the lesser demands placed upon this group. Meanwhile the symphony band maintained or exceeded the quality of last year’s landmark season, at the Bands of America National Concert Band festival in Indianapolis . They provided another stellar performance at MICCA, earning their eighth consecutive invitation to perform at Symphony Hall, in Boston , via a gold medal. This unprecedented run at Symphony Hall is a testament to the students’ commitment to making music a passionate and meaningful experience in their lives.

Part of great musicianship is the ability to read music on sight. The bands quickly learned new music after the Pops for their last concert of the school year, the Spring Concert. This is a clear indication that the students and the program are doing it the right way. They performed a grand style of literature at the concert, including 7 pieces, all at the highest level of difficulty.  With an amazing crop of graduating seniors, the band took no prisoners. When they took the stage, it was time for the audience and the performers to engage themselves in an emotional moment from beginning to end.

The symphony band performs about seven times a year, including three pops concerts, a spring concert, the MICCA festival, Symphony Hall, and graduation. Symphony Band is accessed through auditions held in late February. Next year’s symphony band audition piece will be the same one that will be used for auditions in the Southeast Regional District competitions.

King Philip Symphony Band Honored!

The King Philip Symphony Band was recently notified that they have been selected as one of only seventeen bands in the country to participate in the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in March 2005.  The festival will be a four day event, highlighted by a forty minute performance by the King Philip Symphony Band.

The 2004-2005 Symphony Band consists of over eighty students.  The King Philip Music Association has begun fundraising efforts to raise the more than seventy thousand dollars needed to send the group.

Any group, or friend of the King Philip Music Program, wishing to make a donation  can send it  to:

The Symphony Band, made its sixth appearance at "Stars at Symphony" in the Spring of 2004, performing "Variations on America" by Charles Ives/transcribed by William Rhodes/arr. by William Schuman; "Ghost Train"  by Eric Whitacre (Movement 1 - The Ride) and "Americans We" by Henry Fillmore, Jr./edited by Fredrick Fennell.  The music of "Ghost Train" was a particular favorite for the students and will form the basis for a portion of Fall 2004's marching band show.

Playing at Boston’s Symphony Hall is an experience that many high school students will never achieve.  These students have worked hard to make this experience possible and we congratulate them for their superior performance!

2003-2004's Symphony band was one of two instrumental ensembles for in-school work.  While the Symphony band is selected through audition, the Concert Band provides a training group and a place to develop better instrumentation.  This smaller and generally younger group won a Silver Medal at the Spring 2004 MICCA State Concert Festival, in stiff competition.  All in all it is a very exciting time for the band program as we try and stretch into other venues, setting even higher standards.
