KP MARCHING BAND WINS BOA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Saturday, October 7, the King Philip Marching Band and Color Guard won the Bands of America Northeast Regional Championships, as well as Class AA Championship, held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. KP was the lone band representing Massachusetts, and competed with 21 other bands from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Connecticut.
During the day, bands performed for three Class Championships. In only their second Bands of America (BOA) event and repeating their 1999 BOA Regional Class AA win, King Philip earned the Class AA Championship with a solid performance of their show "Piano Concerto #2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff." KP also captured the three Class AA Highest Achievement Awards for Outstanding Music, Outstanding Visual and Outstanding General Effect. The classes are based on student population in grades 10-12. Class A is for enrollment of 600 or less, Class AA for enrollment of 601-1149, and Class AAA is for schools with more than 1150.
Ten bands earned spots in the Finals, setting the stage for the evening's performances. King Philip topped the field with a score of 83.65 out of a possible 100 points, followed by Norwin High School, North Huntington, PA with a score of 82.05. A perennial BOA champion, Norwin was the Class AAA winner. The 2000 Regional Championships Outstanding Music, Visual, and General Effect Highest Achievement Awards were also awarded to King Philip. As a highlight to the event, the KP Band gave a highly charged and emotional encore performance to all their fans.
The King Philip Marching Band and Color Guard will now be fine tuning their show as they prepare to head to the BOA Grand National Championships on November 11 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana.
