The 2002-2003 jazz program has gotten off to a fast start, beginning three weeks
ahead of the typical starting point. There are two jazz ensembles. Jazz 1
Ensemble rehearses at the high school in sectionals. Membership was
determined through audition in the spring. A second jazz ensemble rehearses at
the middle school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 - 5 and is conducted by
Mr. Wolloff. The jazz combos meet on Fridays this year and are being taught by Jeremy Udden. Unfortunately, Jeremy has been dealing with a health issue this Fall and Nathan Blehar has been keeping the students on track until Mr. Udden is able to return. Interest in jazz has grown, but as always, more can join. This is the study of truly American music and heritage. Jazz Ensemble 1, as in former years, is studying the great music of Duke Ellington with the intention of competing in the National competition run by Jazz at Lincoln Center. The band will submit a tape along with 150 other bands from across America hoping to be selected into the final fifteen in May. Each band selected has the honor of performing at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. Last year that dream was realized for KP. This year we have a daunting task ahead of us if we are to return to the event. The Essentially Ellington committee has changed the rules for selection of finalists. KP will be in a pool of entrants for five spots, reserved for those who have made it to finals the past two years. The competition is expected to be fierce, but the good news is that KP has the students willing to make that effort. We look forward to sharing the exciting music we are learning this year. | ||
