Winter 2007

For the first time in more then 5 years the King Philip Indoor Percussion Ensemble will be heading back to the WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio! This year the members of the ensemble will be entering in Marching Open Class.

Under the direction of Rudy Gowern this year’s group will be performing the music of Jim Bonney’s “Chaos Theory”.  Originally written for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Wind Orchestra. Jim Bonney was able to fuse progressive/hard rock intensity with classical sophistication. Blurring the lines between something precise and mathematical with something primal and visceral.

SYSTEMATIC

The group is made up of High School and Middle School students and will be marching 4 snares, 2 tenors, 5 bass drums along with 14 members in the Pit. The ensemble also welcomes back two staff members, Mr. Ed Devlin (Visual designer for the marching band) and Mr. Chuck Moulton. Together they will both be designing the visual aspect of the show.

This year’s staff includes:

Rudy Gowern- Director/ Program Designer/ Arranger

Colby Kuzontkoski- Front Ensemble Arranger and Instructor

Zach Schlicker- Battery Arranger and Instructor

Ed Devlin & Chuck Moulton- Visual Designers

Ondrea Gowern- Movement specialist

James Foulis- Battery Tech

Tim Sepe- Tenor Assistant

We hope to see you all at preview!

The 2006 Winter Percussion ensemble completed a successful performing season, earning top place finishes in many of the competitions in their Open Class division. Under the direction of Rudy Gowern, this young ensemble produced an enchanting performance to the music of Danny Elfman, from his score to Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The performing ensemble consisted of twenty-seven percussionists ranging from grades seven to twelve.  Nine of the players were new to Winter Percussion. Joining the musicians was a troupe of ten lively theatrical performers who brought The Nightmare Before Christmas characters to life.  The performance was composed of three movements, “This is Halloween”, “Kidnap the Sandy Claws”, and “What’s This?”, as they depicted the story of how Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, discovers Christmas and determines to kidnap Santa Claus and take over Christmas Town.  In the end, Santa’s elves foil Jack’s plans, by capturing Jack and releasing Santa in time for Christmas.

Congratulations and special thanks go to graduating senior Tim Sepe who served as ensemble leader.

KP Winter Classic 2004
The winter percussion program was small but mighty, performing to a unique arrangement of music entitled “Obstacles”.  Under the direction of Jamie Powers, the percussion group learned new techniques and rhythms as they expanded their performance repertoire to compete in the NESBA Finals, where they placed third in their class.

Indoor Percussion Ensemble takes Silver in the NESBA Concert Percussion World Class Championship
The development of the percussion program at King Philip offers a unique opportunity and a variety of experiences. James Powers heads up the program and is assisted Mike Wasielewski. On Tuesday evenings serious students get together to rehearse in a variety of small chamber groups. Preparing shorter works in duets, trios, quartets, and bigger, Tuesday evenings serves up a plethora of different styles and idiomatic experiences.

On Wednesdays, the entire percussion program will be putting together one large work for competition. The group will rehearse on Wednesdays from 6 - 9 PM. Open to anyone with keyboard skills as well as percussion skills, this group will be performing "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein. The KP Indoor Percussion group will compete in NESBA during the winter months culminating in the NESBA Championships on Saturday, April 5 at Salem HS in Salem, MA.

On Thursdays it is DRUM NITE. Come one, come all to just plain drum. Develop techniques that build one's strength. Learn check patterns, learn funky grooves and cadences. This night is a must do for drummers. We all know drummers like to drum, drum, drum. Well, this is the place to be from 7 - 9 PM.
