AP Studio Art 3D: Period-GInstructor: Mrs. Cress
Advanced Placement Studio Art 3D will address three major concerns that are constants in the teachings of art: 1) a sense of quality in students’ work; 2) a sense of concentration on a particular visual interest or problem; and 3) the students’ need for breadth of experience in the formal, technical, and expressive means of the artist. Students will explore the concepts of form and space by building and creating with a variety of materials including clay, wire, wood, plaster, metal, and found objects to create sculptures dealing with various themes. Students will be expected to keep an on-going sketchbook of their class experience. Sketchbooks will be used to house their collection of class handouts, brainstorming sketches, weekly sketchbook assignments, and project evaluations. Students will be graded on their daily participation in class, use of skills and techniques in projects, and upkeep of their sketchbook. In the spring their finished portfolio will be sent to the college board for assessment.
Students will strengthen their skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and personal expression. Students will demonstrate their knowledge through: the creation of their clay pieces, critiques, written evaluations and their interactions with others as they participate in creating a respectful learning community. Above all, and most importantly, students will learn to think like an artist.
Thinking Like An Artist
In this day and age, being ‘smart’ has taken on a new meaning; it is no longer enough to learn and memorize facts. Information is readily available and just a mouse click away. One of the most important things a student can learn is what to do with facts and information; how to think like an artist:
• The ability to take risks
• A capacity to learn from mistakes
• Looking at things more closely than most
• Seeing the ordinary and the potential for extraordinary
• Making connections between the world, themselves, and ideas
• Working towards full potential, never settling for mediocrity
• Embracing a challenge
• Generating new possibilities
