Hello Parents, Students, and Guardians:
Wow! We are half-way through trimester one already, I cannot believe it! It is has been a most atypical school year for sure, but we are making it through, and we are making some great memories along the way.
I wanted to take a moment to update everyone on what we have been studying in Language Arts class this term. The chart below lists the short stories and skill focus that we have studied so far:
Short Story Literary Focus
“The Fun They Had” Connections to modern life
“The Dinner Party” The stages of plot; irony
“Seventh Grade” Conflicts (internal vs external)
“Miss Awful” Characterization
“Charles” Foreshadowing; irony
“The Veldt” and
“Click Clack the Rattlebag” Mood and suspense
For grammar, we have reviewed capitalization, comma rules, and using appositives in our writing. We will continue to practice these skills as we move to the second half of term one.
In writing we are learning to create formal paragraphs that contain: topic sentences that identify the body of work and the subject of the essay; enriched word choices; the four steps to integrating text evide (quote burgers); smooth transition between our ideas; and a concluding sentence that leaves the reader satisfied. In addition, we have just started writing short narratives that will be entertaining, as well as, descriptive.
I am so proud of the way that the students have handled the remote and cohort phases, It has been challenging to keep the momentum going when I see the students only two days in person, but minimizing the spread of Covid is a real and legitimate concern for everyone.
I look forward to sharing more memorable moments online and in class with the students, and I wish you all a safe and happy Halloween weekend!
Let’s take care of each other.
