Superintendent Paul Zinni would like to offer the following guidance and safety tips as Halloween approaches to help King Phillip Regional High School and Middle School students and families celebrate safely this season.
Halloween Trick-or-Treating & Festivity Safety
- If older children or teenagers are venturing out unsupervised, discuss with them the route and make a plan if they get separated from their friends. Also, discuss where your teen can and can not go.
- If you go to a party, always watch your drink and be careful of what you accept from strangers. Say no to any drugs or alcohol. Make sure there is adult supervision at the party as well.
- It’s “Keen To Be Seen!” Wear bright, reflective costumes, add strips of reflective tape, or wear glow sticks to be more visible to drivers.
- When choosing a costume, choose something comfortable. To prevent falls, avoid oversized and high-heeled shoes. Make sure the rest of the costume also fits well. Don’t use colored or decorative contact lenses, unless they’re prescribed by a licensed eye doctor.
- Don’t partake in any tricks that could get you in trouble. Halloween is supposed to be fun for all, don’t play any tricks on people that could damage their personal property or result in injury.
Headlines in the news have cautioned that “rainbow fentanyl,” a deadly illegal drug, can resemble brightly colored candy. While there have been no reports in Massachusetts, these news reports do highlight the importance of maintaining vigilance as a parent or guardian. When your trick-or-treater returns home to dump their plunder on the kitchen counter, be sure to check for candy that is open or that you do not recognize.
Driving Safety
Halloween can be a dangerous night for both pedestrians and drivers, so follow these basic safety tips:
- Watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs.
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
- At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.
- Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.
- Get rid of any distractions – like your phone – in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
- If hosting a party, do not let impaired guests drive, remind guests to plan ahead and designate their sober driver. Offer alcohol-free beverages and never get in the care with someone who has been drinking.
