Welcome to language arts class!  We are going to have a great year!  Together we will study grammar, literature, writing, and vocabulary.  We are always doing something different in language arts class, and the fun never ends!

During term four students will be starting a wonderful poetry unit.  They will read and analyze poems by poets such as Billy Collins, Lucille Clifton, Pat Mora, Seamus Heaney, Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Noyes, Shel Silverstein, and Robert W. Service.  They will learn poetry terms that will be applied to each poem that they read. Students will be given vocabulary words from the poems, and they will be able to recognize and understand each word in context.  To culminate the unit, students will use their knowledge of poetry and their creativity to write a parade poem about their lives.

Along with completing a poetry unit, in term four, students will be also completing a fabulous science fiction unit.  Throughout this unit, we will study the characteristics of science fiction and read a variety of genres within science fiction.  Students will read the short stories, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, “Examination Day” by Henry Slesar, and “The Last Dog” by Katherine Paterson, the teleplay “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” by Rod Serling, and the award winning novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry.  Students will read and analyze these works looking for common themes along the way.  Additionally, students will complete writing assignments that involve these titles, and they will write a creative, flash-forward-flash-back essay.

Finally, during term four students will fine-tune their grammar skills by studying subject verb agreement, verb tenses, and irregular verbs. These grammar skills will be applied to what they write.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. By working together, we can have a successful year! Thank you!
